The View of a Lazy Basturd

First off it is true, you can learn something new everyday.  I learned that I am a lazy basturd.  Here's why:

After reading up on infrared on Boomslice's webpage (also a member of DA) I learned that he white balance not from green grass, like I have been doing and saved in my camera.  No this master mind white balances off what ever is in the center of his viewfinder.  Which give better better color range as I have just found while shooting "Tree of Life", but you all knew that already.  That's not the kicker, I got into the habit of doing the custom white balance that I did it for color but found the mid-tone (anything that is between light and dark) within the image.  Sweet Christmas Monkey Butts...  What the hell have I been doing all this time.  Just letting the camera think for me and setting thr modes and then shooting.  Sure this is a bit more work but...  Wow better.

Any Whoo, since you guys like my Seattle shot so much I thought I would chance the subject and show you the work of others who shoot Seattle.

you are right. white balance can be a power tool to
create special colors and moods in your pictures -
not only in IR-Photography, but also in genaral.
i screwed with the WB knob as i shot this:
BDR
of course it's an hdr, but through the WB adjustment i was able to create the blue color.

White balance is the most difficult and frustrating thing about digital photography. I recently bought an Expo Disc to help set custom white balance and though I understand the principle, I am STILL trying to learn how to get it just right.

Thank you so much for the feature. I so appreciate it! :blowkiss:

I know, I keep saying to myself what do I use for a refence for the correct color.

I find that the expo disc eliminates guesswork and is more reliable than using an 18% gray card, but it still has times when getting an accurate color sample is really tricky. Which is too bad because when it works properly it is absolutely wonderful!!!

I got a fix for that. While doing some searching on the disc I found this little tip. Put on your longest zoom lens (mine is a 300mm) and zoom all the way in. Then process to get the correct white balance. The correct meter reading is key to get this to work. I use a f/22 because I want to get the sharpest image I can but I found that it turns out grainy but for the purpose of getting the correct white balance in low light it helps. After all that I put on the lens that I want to use and start dividing the f/stop by 2 until I have a sharp grainless image. Sure its a lot of work but it helps not to use Neat Image which makes my images look blurry.
